City and the region of Dresden form a traditionally strong economic area, having grown over a long period of time.
Characteristic for the development of Dresden's economy is one the one hand the wide spectrum of industries but also a growth in the last couple of years, that is above average.
The industry of the region profits from a superb potential of science and research. Dresden is not only an important location for universities and colleges, but also a working place for more than 120 research faculties. From this power and drive of innovation the high technology industry benefits especially. Dresden profiled itself as one of the world leading production locations for microelectronics. Institutes and companies of the biochemistry work in Dresden, as well as companies from the pharmaceutical and visual business.
The economic development of Dresden counts on a great supply of skilled employees, innovation and contemporary infrastructure. The development profits from the high standard of living in the city. The activities of the "Dresden exihibition and international congress centre" are part of this dynamic. Their offerings help to create the economic development of the region and make this performing economic area available to exhibitiors and organisers.
In the first decade after the reunion of Germany alone, the county capital Dresden experienced an investment of over 50 billion in the economy and infrastructure, more than half of it going into craftmanship and the industry. The result of this was, that it was possible to obtain the traditionally wide spectrum of Dresden businesses and the number of businesses grew from 12.00 in 1990 to around 41.100 in 2004. Branch offices of renowned companies give Dresden international significance in some trades.
Dresden, for years, has one of the lowest unemployed rates and in comparison to eastern germany a high spending power. One of the reasons is, that nearly half of the technological research institues and developing capacities of Saxony, are concentrated in Dresden. This interaction of these facts enables Dresden to have an economic growth, that lies above the german average. For example, the growth in the year 2003 was 3,3 percent.
The airport of Dresden is in many ways part of these developments. It was made possible, by enlargening the network of routes, to offer flights to important European economic centres on a regular basis. Continuous investments in the infrastructure of the airport allow, that the processing areas, the traffic technology and the new technologies can manage the growing numbers of services.
The most important project was to built the airport terminal at Dresden, from 1998 until 2001 Hereby a completely new airport, with its own rapid transit train station, a direct connection to the motorway and a new multi storey car park, was built. With the airport Dresden terminal, passengers and also airlines receive a service, that has improved hugely. The basis is the concept of short ways, the fast and direct changing between the transport means aircraft, train- and street transport. At the same time, a new multifunctional area, which is worth a visit, accrued, including shopping, travelling and catering.
